Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. Hope you all are safe and healthy. I picked this anime up when it was around episode 3 because at first I didn’t understand the plot but after I watched the first episode I was hooked. SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 1 AHEAD.
The story starts at the elite Itan Private High School, where Shouko Komi immediately gets popular in her class due to her elegance, apparently stoic personality and unparalleled beauty. Next we shift to Hitohito Tadano, the average student in the school who finds himself sitting next to Komi and being envied by his classmates. Tadano however discovers a truth, it isn’t that Komi is stoic or thinks too highly of herself to talk to her classmates, instead she has a severe communication disorder. After getting to talk to Komi, Tadano realizes that even though she appears perfect, her life hasn’t been as great as it seems. Komi reveals to Tadano that she wants to better herself in high school and make 100 friends. Tadano decides to help Komi reach her goal of 100 friends and in the ensuing adventure both of them meet new people, learn new things and deal with the everyday life issues that they have while they slowly and yet surely fall in love.
The different personalities of the characters is the main joy of this show. Since the show is about Tadano helping Komi reach 100 friends, we are sure to see some very interesting characters with different personalities. The characters aren’t all dumped on us at the same time but rather each character is introduced and built up slowly to make us understand their quirks and characteristics. We have our main character Komi who has anxiety in social situations and suffers from a communication disorder. The entire show is about seeing her come out of her shell, learning to express herself and her growth which makes her an interesting character to watch. The next is Tadano who is helping Komi get to her goal of 100 friends, the only person who managed to look past Komi’s appearance and see her real self. The next is Osana Najimi, the childhood friend of Tadano who has been seen switching genders multiple times throughout the show, though not showing any growth, Najimi is a catalyst for Komi’s own growth. There are many more characters but I don’t want to spoil everything over here.
I loved how the animation was done for this show, it was stunning, everything from the characters themselves to the backgrounds down to the leaves of the trees, it was all very beautiful. The show also has a great soundtrack and does quite a few play on words. All these things make sense as this is a show about a girl with a communication disorder and so the feelings, the atmosphere everything needs to expressed with anything other than words. The characters do speak but that is more dialogue and the music is what really sets the tone for each scene which shows how much effort went into making this show.
The thing to pick up from this anime is that not everything that we see is true. This is shown from the very first episode till the end of the show. While everyone else is fascinated with Komi’s appearance and beauty, Tadano is someone who looks past that to see her real self which is actually a girl struggling with anxiety. This is applicable in real life as we judge people based on how they look without knowing what they are under the covering of flesh and bones. The show also picks up on the themes of kindness from the kindness that Tadano shows towards Komi throughout the entirety of the 12 episodes.
The show has 12 episodes and is already scheduled for a second season for April 2022 so I won’t be reading the manga anytime soon. This is a show that is a must watch for everyone because it’s fun, it’s lighthearted and good to relax to. The music is absolutely a delight to listen to and the show itself is a very good slice of life. I am desperately waiting for season 2 but until then you should catch up to the first season.

The goal is a 100 friends let’s start with one,
Lot’s of people around but this is easier said than done,
Childhood friend Najimi is first and now it’s begun,
Won’t stop till in the no friends list there is none.
The shy kid pushes herself we get to see some growth,
And Tadano is with her cause he’s taken an oath,
He’ll help her till the end and won’t a second loathe,
This is a romance and it invovles them both.
Every second is new you can’t anticipate,
What’s to come as these kids navigate,
Their life in an attempt to reeducate,
Us because this is Komi can’t communicate.
