Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. Hope you all are safe from the COVID-19 and having a great day. This anime is something I’ve slept on for a long time but after watching it, I’m glad I did, it was fun. SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 1 AHEAD.

The show features a bar known as Quindecim, a place in the afterlid where people who die at the same time arrive in order to be judged by playing a game. The twist is that the games themselves create extreme situations drawing out the inner darkness in people’s hearts and then either sending them to be reincarnated or into the void. Decim, the bartender is an arbiter who judges the souls that are sent to his bar. He is joined by an unnamed woman who will now be an assistant to him, the girl who is later revealed to be names Miyuki works with Decim to understand how complex humans are and how they are judged. Things unaware to both Decim and Miyuki run in the background as everyone grapples with emotions and finds out if there is a way to judge differently.
The characters are definetly fun to watch with Decim being your emotionless and no bullshit bartender who focuses on the job. Miyuki is a strong willed and idealistic girl who despite acting as Decim’s assistant constantly rebels against his ideas and teaches him about human emotion. There’s also Nona, the head arbiter of the place where Decim works. Then there’s Ginti, another arbiter who believes in passing quick judgement but is later on puzzled by the emotions that human show. There’s also the numerous guests that show up, with everyone being fun and interesting characters with complex backstories of their own. All the characters come together to weave a nice story that is fun to watch and emotional at the same time.
The particular reason that I believe the show shines is not it’s good animation and beautiful colours not the good music which I am always so in love with. It’s the fact that with death they can tell such a beautiful story, the complexity of humans and yet their simplicity. How people of total opposite characters work together and agree on things even when they come from totally opposite perspectives. The creators manage to make the show fun and at the same time really dark and something to think about.
Regret after dying, and the complexities of humans the main themes of the show. While the show works to show us how much people regret what they’ve done in their lives, the ‘darkness’ that Decim claims to draw out is shown to be in every human who is desperate enough. It is because we don’t have an anchor that keeps us tied down to our humanity that we perform henious acts. We regret only after we have done something in our desperation and the only way to avoid that it is to make sure that we have our own anchors that tie us down to humanity. The way to deal with regret is to not perform the act in the first place and if not that then moving on with repentance is the only way. If there truly is a Quindecim which judges us after our deaths then I think we must work to be the best versions of ourselves here so that we can be good people even in our judgement.
While certainly not a masterpiece, Death Parade is a fun anime to watch with 12 episodes and one OVA. While certainly not suited for a mindless binge, it is a fun show to watch which will give you a lot to think about after you finish. A must watch for everyone who is fascinated with philosophy and death.
Rap section:
Take it to the afterlife Quindecim is the bar,
People of all varieties visiting from afar,
But aside from serving drinks it serves a purpose bizarre,
Decim is the bartender the show’s superstar.
Dead people come in pairs and judgement he’s passing,
Each new guest is the one before surpassing,
Dealing with emotions don’t have time for laughing,
Because out in the world the dead are amassing.
Joined by a new girl she’s now his assistant,
But to learn about the guests she’s persistent,
Against the cruel methods of judgement she’s resistant,
But it ain’t so simple people’s minds are twisted.
Aside from all the craziness deeper runs the plot,
Can’t slack off he’s got to give it all he got,
To do it as he wants to he’s only got one shot,
To remember the people that otherwise he’s forgot.
