Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. So I found out about this from Twitter and I was instantly impressed by the premise and the cover page, it took a while but I finally got down to reading it and it was really fun. I’m going to keep this as spoiler free as possible and with that let us jump in.
The story starts off by telling us about ‘Kaijus’ also referred to as ‘monsters’. These are Godzilla like beings which are insanely powerful and have terrorised humanity for a very long time. To fight these monsters humanity has adapted by making suits out of monster muscle fibres as well as making weapons out of strong, a cut above the rest, numbered monsters. In this world, Kafka Hibino works as a disposal unit member whose job is to clean up the corpses of Kaijus once the force is done killing them. Kafka was once an aspiring defence force member alongside his childhood friend Mina Ashiro however Mina has made it to the commander rank of Unit 3 while Kafka is stuck cleaning corpses. One day a monster enters Kafka’s mouth and transforms him into a monster, this monster who is insanely strong is given the status of a numbered monster, Monster No.8. As Kefka struggles with his new powers and aspires to fulfill his dream of standing beside Mina, he also needs to fight the threat of the monsters who have suddenly increased in number and are getting stronger. I know it sounds a lot like AOT and Chainsaw Man but I assure you, till now, it’s been carving its own path.
The characters are simple in this anime, their personalities are established early on and they stick to them while growing through their vulnerabilities. There’s our main hero Kefka who is lesding a miserable life and wants to be a member of the Defence Corps but can’t and after he gains his powers and becomes Monster No.8 he has a shot but still stays true to his goal of standing beside Mina. There’s Mina herself who is a badass commander and also a character I would like to see more of, one of the strongest characters introduced uptill now she provides a valueable benchmark for Kefka to reach. There’s also Kefka’s own fellow members of the troops who all have their own personalities and motivations for joining the team and still manage to work together.
The manga really knows how to do it’s comedy, you’ll often be rolling about after a seriously intense scene which will brighten up your mood. The art is also very beautiful and very well done, so much so that sometimes you’ll pause when there’s a scene of a big monster and just appreciate the effort that went into drawing it. There’s also the great action that is super intense but the big thing that makes Kaiju No.8 worth a read is its engaging story. Currently the story is at Chapter 46 and in this short amount of time it has introduced characters and established a plot which I am deeply engrossed in. The new monsters, the reason why Kefka has his powers, everything is a mystery which needs to be solved. The one complaint I have is that it’s too similar to AOT and Chainsaw Man at times but I guess that’s just the trope that this kind is series falls into, I really think that Kaiju No.8 is carving its own path and that it should keep doing so.
The lesson I managed to pull from this gruesome series is that it’s never too late to push forward for your dreams. Kefka is the worst performer at the exam and is almost sure to lose but still he shows strength and courage and tried to do whatever he can. Even in the battlefield he uses his skills as a disposal man by poiting out enemy weak spots showing that he isn’t going to give up and will do everything possible to rise the ranks and stand beside Mina.
The manga is currently at 46 chapters and the story is getting heated up with lots of new characters being introduced and I feel that the mystery of the new monsters will also be soon addressed and become a major plot point, Kefka’s powers will be explained as well I believe. Right now is a good time to jump into Kaiju No.8 since it has a short story and will have you completely engrossed and waiting for more chapters.

Kefka is the name and he’s got his own goal,
Doesn’t want no fame doesn’t want control,
To stand beside his old friend he wants that role,
Don’t let the monster take over he’s got a pure soul.
When the monster comes out the power is great,
One punch and he’s putting all other Kaijus straight,
Was this all planned or is this willed by fate ?
This ain’t your ordinary superhero this is Kaiju No. 8.
