Suzume – My First Makoto Shinkai movie.

Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. Hope you all are safe and healthy. This was the first movie I watched in theatres and also my first Makoto Shinkai movie and I was blown away. MILD VERY MILD SPOILERS AHEAD.

The story has Suzume Iwato, a high schooler meeting a mysterious man who asks her about ruins around the town. Intrigued, Suzume decides to visit the old ruins herself and finds out about the mysterious world of Gates, doors around the world that when opened will cause destruction on a massive scale. Teaming up with the mysterious male who identifies himself as Munkata Souta, a Closer whose job is to close the Gates scattered across Japan, Suzume embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.

While the story focuses mainly on our two leads that is Suzume and Souta there are a handful more characters to keep the plot interesting however I was amazed by the ability of the movie to go into depth with the characters in such a short period of time. Dreams, ambitions, life, sacrifice, the closeness of people to death all are beautiful themes that surround the characters and reflect them as well as their actions. Too much and it would be spoilers.

The animation is stunning, absolutely stunning in the movie, the world is crafted with beauty and elegance. The story is also thrilling, there’s not a moment that is boring or that isn’t moving the plot forward in some way or the other. The camerawork and voice acting, both things that I rarely (actually I don’t think I ever) talk about were both so spectacular that they didn’t carry the movie but rather complemented the plot in coming out better with more emotions and moving the audience. The pacing is also really good with the funny moments balancing out the thrill at all the right times to make the audience calm down after some spectacular action striking a perfect balance. The backgrounds and settings always complementing the scenes also elevates the movie. The music was also amazing which can be noticed by how much the tune is loved. The flaw of the anime is that there are multiple mysteries that are never really solved and seem to just be there for plot convenience.

The next paragraph will contain heavy spoilers so please skip if you don’t want that.

While I don’t know where Shinkai’s brilliance really lies, I do know that the theme of healing childhood trauma was most prominent and most beautifully explained through the movie. Suzume tragically suffers from loss and healing only with the help of her own older self shows childhood traumas healing only with our own growth. I loved that scene and I loved how it came out and pieces of media exploring themes is what any media should be about.

With a short 2 hour run time, Suzume is a movie that touched me a lot personally and is definitely something that can be majorly for everyone. The fantasy, the emotions, the animation, there is very well something for everyone. I rate the film a deserving 9/10.

So that is it for this post guys hope you got some value from this.  Thank you guys for reading to the end hit me up on Instagram and Twitter with your thoughts and if you have any ideas on what I should write about. Stay safe. Thank you again and I’ll see you all next week.
