REVENGER – Grudges, murder and repentance.

Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. Hope you all are safe and healthy. The animation of the first episode was what drew me in towards the anime and I am glad that it did because this was one epic journey and I enjoyed it quote a lot. MILD SPOILERS AHEAD.

Kurima Raizo is a smurai who is tricked by his superiors into killing his own father in law, in grief and wanting to die he comes upon Usui Yuen, a man who works for the organization known as the Chapel which takes revenge on behalf of people who burn their grudges into a gold coin by biting it. Teaming up with Yuen, Raizo takes his revenge on his superior only to find out that the conspiracy goes far deeper than he could have ever imagined. Becoming a revenger like Yuen and his team, Raizo swears to put the matter to a rest, killing all that stand in his way as he deals with different types of grudges and learns of the dark world of revenge.

This anime focuses a lot on the development and characterization of two characters, Usui Yuen and Kurima Raizo both of whom are incredible characters and deserved all the focus that they got. Usui Yuen is a revenger who works for the Chapel, a secret organization that takes on contracts in the form of bitten gold. Yuen questions the nature of revenge and repentance and which of the two should go for each perpetrator. Kurima Raizo is a samurai with a guilt conscience, he constantly battles with the guilt of the crime that he has committed, as the protagonist I really liked the conclusion to his arc. We have Soji, the drunk and irresponsible member of the revengers whose friendship with Kurima is another good dynamic. We also have Teppa and Nio, other revengers of the group that do not get as much focus.

The good animation is one of the best parts of this anime because some scenes can be absolutely beautiful to watch, a contrast to the dark and grim world of revenge that we follow. The action is decent, I didn’t find it really overwhelming or anything like that but it was still good to watch. The mystery of the story is another thing that it does well, constantly revealing connections between characters and the true nature of some of them. The pain of the people that are unable to take their own revenge is well represented despite begin such a heavy theme, you will feel bad for each character that asks for their revenge. The one bad thing is that sometimes some characters get little screen time but are constantly refereed to later on in the plot which can get confusing.

“Should a culprit be allowed to live if he repents?” This is a question that the anime asks, I won’t spoil too much but this something that we can deeply ponder on, every criminal deserves punishment but does a person who has repentance and guilt for the crime deserve to be punished as well? Can it not be that the person that has committed a crime can someday turn their life around but can never get that chance because they are punished? It really is interesting and the anime shows an interesting take on it as well.

12 episodes makes REVENGER a short watch with a finale that concludes Yuen and Raizo’s arcs absolutely beautifully. You should get in it if you like a mystery with loads of action and seeing characters with great depth, for the conclusion alone is worth it. The anime is a solid 8/10 in my book.

So that is it for this post guys hope you got some value from this.  Thank you guys for reading to the end hit me up on Instagram and Twitter with your thoughts and if you have any ideas on what I should write about. Stay safe. Thank you again and I’ll see you all next week.
