You’ve heard about it by now if you’re in the anime community, it was all the hype when the manga was finished, when the anime was announced and when the anime was airing, Hell’s Paradise gathered a lot of hype and it had all the makings of a good shonen, fighting, emotions but it goes further and that’s what makes it even better.

Gabimaru the Hollow is a famous assassin of the Iwagakure who is awaiting execution but due to his superhuman body and abilities, no execution method can kill him until Sagiri from the legendary clan of executioners, the Asaemon clan appears. She offers him a chance at a pardon. He is to join an expedition consisting of death row inmates and Asaemon clan members to the legendary land of Shinsenkyo on a quest to find the Elixir of Life but the land of legend isn’t friendly and only one of the convicts will be pardoned.
The characters of Sagiri and Gabimaru are amazing, the way they complement each other and understand each other better throughout their journey in a hostile land. However the story isn’t carried by them and their developments and understandings alone rather other characters like Shion and Yuzuriha are more than capable of making the story proceed all on their own without the main characters. Gabimaru especially will win your heart and I can guarantee that personally because seeing him reveal himself from the Hollow that he is known as is an amazing journey.
Hell’s Paradise is gory with the fights, absolutely brutal but that all comes with great combat and good animation to complement it. Each fight is exciting and thrilling and draws you in easily. However as the story progresses, we also see the clash of ideas and motivations making Hell’s Paradise take a step further from being a good shonen.
Gabimaru’s and every character’s desperation to not die for whatever reason that they have is well explored even the shallow reasons feel genuine for the characters. The clash of want for godhood and want for just life is also well shown through a certain set of characters that appear later on in the story.
13 episodes and a finale that leaves you desperate for more with its revelations, Hell’s Paradise is a must watch for Shonen fans but it’s something that will appeal to anime fans in general. I rate it a 8/10 currently with a season 2 in the works.
