Eden of the East – A thrilling masterpiece

Hey guys what is up welcome back to my blog I’m so thankful that you guys took the time out of your day to read my blog post. Hope you all are safe from the COVID-19 and having a great day. I was really really confused when I first watched this anime but once I finished it I understood the true meaning and genius behind it. SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 1.

Saki Morimi a college student on her graduation trip to the USA tries a very suspicious and yet innocent thing. She tries throwing a coin inside the fountain in the grounds of the White House. Having been seen by the police she gets in trouble only to be saved by a naked man holding a gun and a peculiar cell phone. This man who has lost his memories makes his way to an apartment and chooses a passport from one the many he has, taking on the name Takizawa Akira. Takizawa now teaming up with Saki gets back to Japan and then learns about missile attacks on Japan named Careless Monday. Now armed with the knowledge that he was involved in the Careless Monday incident and in the disappearance of 20,000 NEETS, Takizawa sets out to find what he did and why. Using his cellphone which has 10 billion yen given to him to be a Savior he must find out why he erased his memories and why he is a pet of the group known as Seleco.

The characters in the anime are fairly well written with every character having enough of a backstory for us to go on and relate without dragging out the actual plot too much. Takizawa Akira is a fun and quirky male who is clumsy and quick to act, all he wants to do is find out what happened but he does that adding his own charm to it. His carefree methods and joyful nature add life to the story. Saki on the other hand is shown to be a struggling person, someone who has no direction as to what she wants to do in life, she blames herself for everything that goes wrong in her life and that in and of itself shows that she was written to be a character in a bad place. However the way she changes when she interacts with Takizawa by gaining a purpose is the best thing ever. The others are great characters too having their own struggles but not something that’s specifically focused on giving us enough information to go on.

The shining place of the anime is towards the end really. The majority of the show feels like a confusing mess but at the end of the show the missing pieces all click together and show us a masterpiece. This anime does require you to push through some boring stuff and it isn’t all thrill and action all the time. It wasn’t like I expected at all but the end is completely worth it. The beginning beautifully ties in to the end and we understand what everything meant and not a single scene in the anime is shown to be wasted.

The anime really shows the clash of ideologies between the old lazy men of the bureaucracy and the new youth who believes that change must come. Mr. Outside is shown to be a man supportive of change who uses his entire resources to make Japan better whatever way possible. He is a man who is shown to use his resources in a good way albeit his method of picking out his candidates are really questionable. Change is the major thing. Change is something that no one wants and yet everyone in the world has to accept, like the flow of a river you can’t fight it. In the end the show is about being comfortable with change, not pushing your ideologies onto others and knowing that you have time.

The anime is overall a masterpiece but the sheer boredom you feel at the start is definetly not something that everyone can handle easily so if you’re looking for a mindless binge this is a horrible choice. This anime if for the patient viewer who wants to get to the end to solve the mystery. The end I feel is amazing, desire the shows attempts to not take itself seriously it shows just the sheer scale on which the things were happening and how much they affected Japan. The finale makes everything worth it so I really recommend Eden of the East to the patient viewer.

But at the end he simply wants to relax.

He’s kidnapping people and he’s laying a siege,
To the old ideology that’s sucking like a leech,
Out of the country and they’re gonna screech,
As he destroys them saying Nobless Oblige.
